Here are a few ways to successfully search for a new job.
So you’re ready for a career change; a new role with a new company and want to know what your first step should be? Begin with identifying the type of role you want. A question to ask yourself is do you want to stay in the same industry or see what skills can easily translate into something different or more fulfilling. Once you’ve targeted the role and direction, the next step is strategizing the job search. Here are the 7 best ways to launch and conduct your job search:
1. You’ve identified the type of job you want, remember to stick with those types of roles. Don’t deviate to applying to any role that even slightly resembles it. Have a target and be strategic. You need to know what you want and what you bring to the table. This is how you will sell yourself in the resume and cover letter and eventually in the interview.
2. Best days to apply are Tuesday’s through Thursday’s, in the morning. If possible. I usually recommend between 6am-10am. When I was a recruiting for roles, this is when I would scan my inbox and go through resumes for open positions.
3. Keep your resume simple, clean and easy to navigate. A recruiter will on average spend 6-8 seconds scanning it. Don’t make them work at it, trying to decipher where everything is and what you’ve done.
4. Create a spreadsheet or some sort of document so that you can log where you apply, for what role and the date. This way you can keep track of how many roles you’re applying to and following up appropriately with recruiters.
5. Remembering you have two resumes out there, the one you created and the one Google puts together for you. I recommend, typing in your name to see what comes up. Whether you like it or not, organizations are going to see what kind of information the Internet has before considering you for a role. So address anything you find that they would have access to read and check your privacy settings on your social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or TikTok.
6. Update your LinkedIn account, make sure everything on it aligns with your resume and represents you well. This is your professional billboard and should be ready to go as you begin applying for positions. Make sure your personal URL is clean and simple (you will want to add this to your resume) picture is current and the banner represents who you are and the work you do (a great resource for creating this is Canva). You have the option to show you are “open to work” which can be added to your profile picture or you can do it incognito so no one will see it except for recruiters. And while LinkedIn tries hard not to allow recruiters from your current company to see it, they stress it’s something they can’t guarantee 100%. Also be sure to set job alerts, you can have these sent to your phone or email and you can dictate how many and how often.
7. Other places to search for a job? Highly recommend Flexjobs and Remote.co for remote work along with Indeed. Be sure to take advantage of the filters at your disposal. This is where you can set whether or not you want remote, full time, part-time or contract work, when a job was posted and experience level. This will help to weed out the roles you are not interested in. Time is of great value when searching for a new job.
The search is not always easy and at times can feel discouraging when you receive those rejection emails or no communication at all. But I encourage you to be patient, knowing that even though it’s taking awhile it’s not a reflection of your worth or talent. The right job will present itself when the time is right and you are ready.
