If someone hits your profile or website, do they easily understand what you\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2re about and what\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s in it for them?<\/p>\n<p>If not, you need to keep refining your message.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why 10 seconds?<\/strong> If people need 11 seconds to understand what you\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2re all about, they\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ll leave and find someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Benchmark data across thousands and thousands of websites confirms that over half of your visitors will be gone within 10 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"time-on-site-less-than-10-seconds by noomii, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/35299261@N06\/7502269800\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8160\/7502269800_86da2b79d9_z.jpg\" alt=\"time-on-site-less-than-10-seconds\" width=\"640\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Run a 10-second test<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is really useful to do the test in person so you can see how people react to pages. For example, when they like what they see, they tend to settle in for a long read and move their head toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Find a friend or colleague.<\/strong> Ideally the person you are asking is your ideal client but that\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s not necessary (more later).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask them if they have a couple minutes to spare.<\/li>\n<li>Prime them with a conversation that goes something like this:<\/li>\n<li>You: \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cDo you know anything about life coaching?\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/li>\n<li>Regardless of what they say, you answer <em>\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cGreat. That\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s perfect. I\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2d like you take a quick look at my website or online profile so I can collect some feedback. I\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2m testing the website, not you. So please feel free to be as open and honest with me as possible. Any questions?\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Don\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t tell them you\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2re doing a 10-second test. Make them think they\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ll have more time to scan the page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Show them Your Page.<\/strong> Watch how they interact with the page and where their eyes go. Notice their scrolling and eye-scanning behaviors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Interrupt After 10 Seconds.<\/strong> Say \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cDo you mind if I interrupt you quickly. What are your impressions so far?\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Follow-up With More Questions.<\/strong> Like \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cwho do I coach?\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d and \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cwhat are the benefits?\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d. If they aren\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t sure, you have more work to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Keep it Going Past 10 Seconds.<\/strong> At this point in time, the 10-second test is over. But since you have their attention, you might as well ask them more questions. You should aim to have your message memorable and shareable.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I should caution you to not put too much stock into any one person\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s feedback. When testing here at Noomii.com, we\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ve discovered that getting feedback from 4 to 6 people is about right.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 3 is not enough. More than 6 and you start to see the same patterns over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>So yes, 60-seconds (6 people x 10 seconds each) of feedback is all you need to learn if you\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ve got your messaging right. When you do, I\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2m confident your leads will triple!<\/p>\n<p><strong> The 10-second test coffee shop challenge!
