What is Happiness?

A state of well-being and contentment

We all experience happiness at work differently. For some, this is a vibrant and high-energy feeling of being well aligned and capable of taking on the day's challenges. For others, it is the quiet and efficient flow of moving from task to task with confidence and consistency. The exact manifestation is specific to the individual, but the experience is energizing and rewarding.

When leaders in tech are happy, they are able to reliably conquer the regular challenges they face, navigate the complex trade-offs and negotiations, have the capacity to support those around them, and bring energy to everyone they interact with.

And when leaders in tech are unhappy, things can really grind to a halt. They may leave, others may leave, productivity is often reduced, culture can devolve, and ultimately everything just isn't as good as it could be.

What Can Make Us Unhappy?

What exactly makes us happy at work can be quite specific to the individual, but there is a lot that can make us unhappy at work:

  • Ambiguous expectations or anxiety about our ability meet the expectations of others

  • Work patterns that haven't scaled to our scope

  • Communication challenges with reports, colleagues, or senior leadership

  • A disconnect between who we are and who we want to be as a leader

  • Skill gaps we haven't been able to figure out how to address

  • Limited or no support for exploring challenging discussions in a safe space

  • The sense of constantly being behind as each week brings fresh challenges

  • Culture or values misalignment with the team

This list isn’t exhaustive and these affect new and experienced leaders alike, though how they manifest can differ.

The good news is that these can be improved without needing to change jobs. And by addressing these challenges, we improve the retention, experience, and performance of both the leader and those they influence.

The Help I Provide

At the core of my work, I use coaching to help my clients navigate and solve these challenges for themselves. This is incredibly empowering since it not only helps them overcome their immediate challenges, but the challenges to come in the future.

I provide packages for new or established leaders that need support in achieving happiness and success. These packages are designed to take my client on a journey through mitigating their immediate struggles, identifying the experience they want to have as a leader, and then making that a reality.

All of this is grounded in my work with past coaching clients, my formal training in coaching, my study of workplace motivation and happiness, and my experience working as an engineering manager.

And At the root of it all is my passion for helping leaders be happy and successful.

About Me

Hi, I’m Loren!

I’ve spent my career in tech, working on games and game related technology at startups and large corporations alike.

While I’ve always been a people person, I found my love of helping people navigate being happy and successful at work during my time as an engineering manager at Microsoft and Riot Games.

I had long periods of struggling with my own unhappiness in my role and know just how hard it can be to work through it.

Today, it is my mission to help leaders across tech achieve their best. I’ve seen how big a difference effective coaching can make and strive to reach the leaders across tech who need help in threading the needle of being happy at work.
