Closely Related Podcast Episode 5: How much should status matter in your career?

Posted on March 12, 2021 by Samantha Strom, One of Thousands of Career Coaches on Noomii.

The hosts explore the pros and cons of striving for status in your education and career

In this episode, we bring on Closely Related’s first ever guest host—Caleb Jones! Caleb went to Grinnell College with Hannah, and is now a lawyer in Tulsa, OK. We invited Caleb to talk about the (often taboo) topic of status. Our first letter writer asks if she should be striving for a role with an impressive title or prestige. We discuss how status has impacted our education and careers and often led us on an unending quest for external validation. We talk about how status is very impacted by class, and how those with wealth have a completely unfair advantage in the rat race to achieve it.

Status has real pros and cons. It can come as a package deal with money, stability, and responsibility. But it can also conflict with values like work/life balance, mental health, doing good, family, and friends. Plus, the quest for status has led us to stress and compare ourselves to others. (And also harbor bitter resentment for that one C we got in PE.)

Our second letter writer went to graduate school at Harvard and asks—should I put my diploma on my wall? Or does displaying it make me “that guy”? We discuss the balance between wanting to be perceived as smart but also humble.

Hannah Strom is a therapist that specializes in sex and relationships and Samantha Strom is a career and leadership coach. Listeners write in questions about love, work, and everything in between.
