How to Be Creative and Make Time for Play!
Play gets us in touch with FUN and creativity. Are you having enough fun?
With all the relentless chaos and craziness, I feel morally responsible to ask: ARE YOU MAKING TIME FOR PLAY??!!
If the answer is yes, congratulations! Do a little happy dance. Your inner child already smiles upon you. But if you aren’t sure or you can feel your inner child frowning at you from the corner…it’s time to give them a little love.
Try this: make a PLAY-list. Not your favorite summer jams on Spotify, but a list of activities, things, people and places that make you feel like a kid again, that make you feel a little giddy and excited and, dare I say, silly! (Oh, my goodness, I’m an adult, I cannot possibly skip on the sidewalk! They’ll ship me off to the loony bin!) – they won’t, I get away with it every time.
Then start working through it! A couple weeks after making my playlist, I’d unintentionally crossed off the first 3! Just setting a clear and achievable intention sets the wheels in motion.
If you don’t find yourself itching to tackle your list, ask yourself:
1. Does my list actually contain activities I’m excited to try? If not, keep working on it. Don’t settle for ideas that don’t tickle your heart. Be creative. Don’t talk yourself out of anything you come up with.
2. Am I resisting making time for play? Do I make excuses like, it’s not productive or it’s silly or any other objection that sounds like it’s coming from a boring, stinky adult? Take that as a STRONG signal that you need some play in your life and make that adult block off an hour, or even just 20 minutes, in their calendar.
Need some inspiration? Here’s my PLAY-list. No shame in borrowing!
1. Explore a creek
2. Go to the beach
3. Build a sand castle
6. Do cartwheels and somersaults
10. Jump on the bed
12. Play with my food
13. Make a perfume with flowers
15. Make up a game
16. Do a puzzle
17. Collect rocks
18. Dig in the dirt
Good luck and most importantly, have fun!
