People spend time and money preparing for careers - but most of us put almost nothing into preparing for how to create a marriage.
What makes you think you know how to be married? Do you know that 2 of the most critical decisions of your adult life are your career and your mate? Most people put in some type of real preparatory effort either in a school setting or on the job setting to be able to perform their work. Ask how many books most people read to prepare for marriage….. I believe the answer is 0.
But wait – it’s worse than this. We don’t come to our relationships as a blank slate. We come filled up with the model of our parents [which for many was not the model of success] and Hollywood. It’s like getting into a car and putting our hands on the rear view mirror looking into the past to steer the car and then we can’t figure out why we keep banging into things.
There are basic rules that you just need to know. You don’t need to know how the internal combustion engine works to drive a car but you do need to know how to start the car, turn the lights on, change gears etc.. Same with marriage. Those male and female energies are really opposites. And as they say, “opposites attract” – what the quote should have finished with is – and can combine together if you follow some basic guidelines. Just knowing these and making sure you don’t violate the rules will bring a whole level of workability to your current relationship.
