5 Ways to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

Posted on February 05, 2023 by Nikki van den Berg, One of Thousands of Career Coaches on Noomii.

Imposter syndrome is a feeling of self-doubt and insecurity that can affect even the most accomplished individuals.

It’s characterized by feelings of inadequacy and a fear of being exposed as a fraud.

If you’re suffering from imposter syndrome, know that you are not alone. It’s a common experience among high-achievers and it doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough or that you don’t belong. You’ve accomplished a lot to get where you are and you have the skills, knowledge, and abilities to continue succeeding.
Here are five ways to overcome imposter syndrome:

Identify and acknowledge the feeling: The first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognize when you’re experiencing it. Understanding that this is a common feeling among high-achievers can help you to see that it’s not a reflection of your abilities or worth.
Reframe your thoughts: Negative self-talk is a common symptom of imposter syndrome. Try to replace these thoughts with more positive and empowering ones. Instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough,” remind yourself of your accomplishments and the reasons why you were chosen for your current role or project.
Build a support system: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your abilities. Seek out mentors or coaches who can provide guidance and support. You can also connect with others who have experienced imposter syndrome to gain a sense of camaraderie and validation.
Keep a success log: Keep a record of your accomplishments, big and small. This will help you to see your progress over time and remind you of your capabilities when you’re feeling down.
Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential to overcoming imposter syndrome. Make sure to prioritize self-care activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. These activities can help to reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

Remember that imposter syndrome is a normal feeling and with the right mindset and action you can overcome it. Be kind to yourself and don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it.
