So what happens in a coaching session?!
Is it therapy? Is it mentoring? Answering the questions of what actually happens in a coaching session!
Unless you’ve had coaching of some sort, you might be wondering what shape a coaching session takes. Everyone knows the old trope about therapy where the client is peppered with the question “How does that make you feel?” and anyone who’s been to therapy knows that it’s nothing like that (well, most of the time!).
Coaching sessions have a similar format, we ask what you’d like to bring to the table each session and we go from there. Some sessions will have a natural progression from the previous week if there was something still to unpack, other sessions will bring something entirely new to the table that may have cropped up in the week. We’ll discuss these matters, highlight and explore any recurring themes or examine reactions, and then start forming an action plan which will incorporate this and how it may look different next time, or what you might do between sessions to support yourself and your goals.
Clients often look to coaches for the answers, the key takeaway from this is that we’re not the experts. You are. Sure, we have training and knowledge and experience to help guide you through, prod and poke, and help uncover some sticky bits that you’ve been very happily ignoring, but you bring the substance. You bring the work. We’ve got the method, you’ve got the ingredients. Don’t forget that ingredients can make anything, but it might not be the dish you really want unless you have the method and know the method. That’s where coaches come in!
Unlocking confidence, using tools and exercises and, most importantly, listening, means that we can help see the wood for the trees and together we can help get you where you want to go.
Coaching can leave clients feeling inspired, but I think it’s really important for clients to realise how inspiring it is to watch you put the work in, unlock those doors and have those lightbulb moments!
