Lightly, lightly ...

This is one of my favourite poems, by Aldous Huxley.
We all go through rough spots from time to time. Sometimes these phases can be very tough with the accompanying feeling that they’ll never end..
The following poem by Aldous Huxley urges us to try to bring some lightness into the process:
“It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
So throw away your baggage and go forward.
There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,
trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair.
That’s why you must walk so lightly.
Lightly my darling,
on tiptoes and no luggage,
not even a sponge bag,
completely unencumbered.”
― Aldous Huxley
As the poem states, at times we can feel very deeply and the idea is not to deny that. Some of the things we are going through are life-changing, there’s no way around that… However, if we can, even if if feels counterintuitive, find a way to reframe the situation and bring in that lightness, we can let go some of the cramping up, regain some breathing space and detect what else the painful situation contains to help in making the move forward.
