Lightly, lightly ...

This is one of my all time favourite poems, by Aldous Huxley.
We all go through rough patches from time to time. Sometimes the patches are indeed very rough and seem like they just go on and on…
This poem by Aldous Huxley urges us to bring some lightness into the process:
“It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
So throw away your baggage and go forward.
There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,
trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair.
That’s why you must walk so lightly.
Lightly my darling,
on tiptoes and no luggage,
not even a sponge bag,
completely unencumbered.”
― Aldous Huxley
As the poem states, at times we can feel very deeply and the idea is not to refute that. Some of the things we are going through are life-changing, there’s no way around that… But if we can find that little spark, that opening that lets in some lightness, we are creating circumstances where we can let slide off some of the stress, the cramping up and regain some breathing space. From there the step to create a shift in our perspective becomes slightly easier.
