When approaching retirement, lifestyle planning is just as important as financial planning. Here are five important considerations that will help you plan and execute your exciting and fulfilling next chapter.
1. Purpose and Identity
• Have I thought about what will give my life meaning after I stop working?
• Are there causes, hobbies, or interests I want to explore more deeply?
• Would I consider volunteering, mentoring, or part-time work to stay engaged?
• Question: “What will get me out of bed in the morning once I’m no longer working full time?”
2. Social Connections
• Do I have strong friendships or family relationships I want to nurture?
• Have I thought about how to replace the social interaction I got from work?
• Am I part of any communities, clubs, or groups I want to stay active in, deepen or join?
• Question: “Who are your people—and how will you stay connected with them in retirement?”
3. Health and Wellness
• Do I have a plan to stay physically active and mentally sharp?
• Am I up to date on healthcare check-ups and coverage?
• Do I practice habits that support long-term well-being (nutrition, sleep, stress management)?
• Question: “What does a healthy retirement look like for me?”
4. Daily Structure and Routine
• Have I thought about how I’ll spend an average day or week in retirement?
• Do I have a balance of relaxing, engaging, and social activities planned?
• Am I comfortable with unstructured time—or do I thrive with a routine?
• Question: “What would my ideal week in retirement include?”
5. Living Arrangements and Location
• Does my current home and location support the lifestyle I want?
• Am I close enough to family, friends, or amenities I value?
• Have I considered downsizing, relocating, or adapting my home for aging in place?
• Question: “Does where I live match how I want to live in retirement?”
