You Work Hard—Where Is Your Money Going? 3 Habits to Build Clarity & Confidence

Posted on May 15, 2025 by Olga Maksymovych, One of Thousands of Money and Finance Coaches on Noomii.

Struggling to see where your money goes? Learn 3 expert-backed habits to gain clarity, save smarter, and take control of your financial future.

Let’s be honest: most people don’t avoid money because they’re irresponsible.
They avoid it because they feel overwhelmed, ashamed, or unsure where to start.

And yet—getting clear about your finances is one of the most empowering things you can do.

In my work as a financial coach, I help conscious professionals and entrepreneurs not just “fix” their money—but completely transform their relationship with it. The good news? That transformation starts with simple, practical steps you can take right now.

Below are three habits I teach my clients to help them feel more grounded, more in control, and more aligned with their money—without shame or spreadsheets overload.

1. Use the 50/30/20 Rule to Get Out of the Guessing Game
If you’re not sure how much of your income “should” go toward bills, spending, or savings, start here. The 50/30/20 Rule gives you a clear and flexible starting point.

Break your monthly income into three buckets:

50% for essentials (housing, groceries, utilities, transportation)
30% for lifestyle (dining out, travel, hobbies)
20% for saving, investing, or paying down debt
Why it works: It gives you an immediate benchmark. Even if the exact numbers don’t fit your situation, this structure helps you spot imbalances and make smarter decisions.

If you’re spending 70% of your income on lifestyle alone, that’s a red flag.
If you’re not saving anything, that’s a signal—not a failure.

2. Do a Values-Based Spending Review
Here’s something I have every client do early in our work together:

Pull up your bank and credit card statements from the past 3–6 months. Then, separate your spending into two categories:

Mandatory expenses: Rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, phone, taxes
Discretionary expenses: Subscriptions, shopping, entertainment, travel, dining out
Start with the mandatory:

Ask yourself: When was the last time I reviewed or compared my providers?
If it’s been over a year, it’s time to shop around. Clients often save hundreds per year by renegotiating rates or switching to better plans—without changing their lifestyle.
Then, move to discretionary spending:

Which expenses genuinely align with your values? (Think education, self-development, or meaningful experiences.)
Which ones feel unnecessary or habitual? (Unused subscriptions, impulse purchases, or convenience spending that adds up.)
Lastly, ask:

Am I saving at least 20% of my income?
If not, don’t panic. Start by cutting what doesn’t serve you—not what brings you joy or growth. Financial wellness is about alignment, not deprivation.

3. Open a Dedicated Account and Name It with Purpose
One of the easiest ways to take control of your financial life is to give your money direction.

Here’s how:

Open a second checking or savings account
Give it a meaningful name—like “Emergency Fund,” “Travel 2025,” or “Business Launch”
Automate a monthly transfer, even if it’s just $25–$50
Why it works: When money is all lumped together, it’s too easy to spend it without intention. But when you name your goal and give it its own space, you create momentum.
You start seeing money as a tool—not just something that slips through your fingers.

Bonus: Quick Win for Tackling Debt
If you’re dealing with multiple debts, don’t wait until you have it “all figured out” to take action. Use this quick-start strategy:

List your debts from smallest to largest (ignore interest rates for now).
Focus on paying off the smallest balance first, while making minimum payments on the rest. Once that first one is gone, roll that payment into the next one.

It’s called the “smallest first” method, and it works because quick wins create motivation—and motivation fuels consistency.
Debt is not a personal failure. It’s a solvable equation. This strategy gives you momentum and a clear sense of progress from day one.

Why These Habits Matter More Than You Think

On the surface, these habits might seem simple—like better budgeting, smarter tracking, paying off debt, or setting clearer goals.

But here’s the truth: when you start making conscious decisions with your money, you’re doing more than improving your finances. You’re gently rewiring the part of you that may have felt out of control, unsafe, or stuck for years.
These habits build self-trust. They create structure for your nervous system. And they lay the groundwork for deeper mindset and emotional shifts that allow abundance to grow.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to be perfect to take control of your finances. You just need to get curious, get organized, and take one step at a time.

These small habits—spending with intention, reviewing what matters, and giving your money direction—can completely change how you feel about money. They’re simple, but they’re powerful.

If you’re ready to stop guessing, stop stressing, and start building a financial life that actually works for you—I’d love to support you.
