Ben, from an English-speaking country, moved to Paris for the 2024 Olympics and asked for my help via LinkedIn to support his 6-month integration.

Coaching to succeed in expatriation notably from US to France
Month 1 – A New Chapter in Paris
Issue: Ben seeks a balance between his enthusiasm for this new professional opportunity in France and concerns regarding managing an international team in an unfamiliar environment.
Support: Through active listening and questioning techniques, I facilitated Ben’s identification of his fears and encouraged him to devise solutions. Additionally, we clarified his professional and personal goals for this new career stage.
Results: Ben gained awareness of his strengths and weaknesses, developed a clear vision of his goals, and initiated strategies to overcome his fears.

Month 2 – Understanding Cultural Differences
Issue: Ben encounters cultural misunderstandings with some team members, necessitating a deeper understanding of cultural nuances to enhance collaboration.
Support: Collaboratively, we explored cultural disparities and their impact on communication and relationships. Ben developed increased cultural sensitivity and adapted his communication style accordingly.
Results: Ben’s heightened cultural awareness led to improved communication and enhanced relationships within the team.

Month 3 – The Challenge of Intercultural
Communication
Issue: Ben faces difficulty expressing his ideas clearly in French, leading to misunderstandings with his team.It is imperative for him to enhance his intercultural communication skills to foster mutual understanding.
Support: Collaboratively, we addressed the challenges of intercultural communication, identifying strategies tailored to Ben’s needs. Ben opted for telephone French lessons to improve his language proficiency and actively practiced active listening techniques.
Results: Ben’s heightened cultural awareness led to improved communication and enhanced relationships within the team.

Month 5 – Ben’s Professional Development
Issue: Ben occasionally feels overwhelmed by the pressure to excel in his role as the director of the French subsidiary, highlighting the importance of stress management and maintaining a positive mindset.
Support: I encouraged Ben to develop personalized strategies for stress management and achieving a work-life balance. Furthermore, we clarified his long-term professional and personal objectives.
Results: Ben devised effective stress management techniques and gained clarity on his long-term goals, enabling him to navigate challenges while advancing in his leadership role.

Month 6 – The Rewards of Perseverance
Issue: Following the resolution of numerous
challenges, Ben seeks to sustain motivation and further his development as a leader, acknowledging the role of coaching in fostering resilience and determination.
Support: I motivated Ben to consolidate his coaching achievements and formulate an action plan for continuous leadership development.
Results: Ben cultivated a clear vision of his professional future and outlined actionable steps to advance his leadership capabilities.
Each stage highlights the specific challenges that Ben, as an expatriate from an Anglo-Saxon culture, faces in his role as leader of an international team in Paris. The importance of coaching as a lever for personal and professional development is thus emphasized. By working together, Ben was able to develop his own solutions to overcome challenges and achieve his professional and personal goals.
