The High Cost of Comfort: Why Intentionality and Repetition Win

We don’t drift into greatness.
We drift into what’s easy.
As I reflected this weekend, here are some things that resonated for you to consider.
“Lack of intentionality and repetition leads to the completion of that which is easiest and comfortable.” — Nick Bare
We don’t drift into greatness.
We drift into what’s easy.
And what’s easy?
✔️ Checking email instead of making the hard call.
✔️ Attending another meeting instead of prepping for the one that matters.
✔️ Reading about growth instead of doing the reps that cause it.
Nick Bare’s quote hit me like a freight train because it names something many of us feel but rarely call out:
Without intentionality, comfort will win.
Without repetition, growth won’t stick.
A quick story from this weekend:
I had just returned from a long day at my son’s baseball tournament, over 8 hours at the field. It was Sunday night. I was hot, tired, and mentally drained. Honestly? I just wanted to crash.
But I knew I needed to move. I needed to do something for myself, to reset for the week.
So, even though it was 97 degrees outside, I laced up my shoes and went for a 4-mile walk while listening to the School of Greatness podcast.
Not because I felt like it. Because I knew it would serve me.
And it did. I cleared my head. I found some stillness. I felt better than I had all day. I walked farther than planned, clocking 14,000 steps by the time I wrapped up the day.
Here’s what I learned (again):
– The things we least want to do are often exactly what we need to do.
– Intentionality beats comfort. Every time.
Why this matters for leaders:
Most people don’t lack talent—they lack systems. They’re capable. Smart. Hardworking. But they don’t consistently act in alignment with their purpose.
Intentionality is the decision. Repetition is the discipline.
Together? They create momentum, mastery, and meaningful impact.
Try this:
– Pick one area where you’re drifting.
– Ask: What does intentionality look like here?
– Commit to one small, repeated action this week.
You don’t need more motivation. You need a moment of intentionality and the courage to take the first uncomfortable step.
