Identity in Christ: Seeing Yourself Through God's Eyes

Posted on July 07, 2025 by Amy Beggs, One of Thousands of Christian Coaches on Noomii.

Discover your true identity in Christ: chosen, loved, renewed, and complete. Live from truth, not striving, and embrace the freedom of being A.L.I.V.E

In a world that constantly tells us who we should be, what we should achieve, and how we should look, discovering our true identity in Christ provides an unshakable foundation. As a Christian, understanding who you are in God’s eyes isn’t just encouraging; it’s transformative and liberating.

The World’s Identity vs. God’s Truth
The world measures identity through accomplishments, appearance, possessions, and the approval of others. These shifting standards create an exhausting cycle of striving and inevitable disappointment.

God offers a different perspective. Your identity in Christ is:

- Given, not earned

- Unchanging, not circumstantial

- Based on relationship, not performance

- Defined by love, not achievement

Biblical Foundations of Your Identity
You Are Chosen
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

Before you achieved anything, God chose you. Your existence isn’t random; it’s purposeful and intentional.

You Are a New Creation
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Your past mistakes don’t define you. In Christ, you’re continually being renewed and transformed. Stop looking backwards. Your created purpose is ahead of you.

You Are a Child of God
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1)

You belong to the family of God with all the rights, privileges, and inheritance that come with divine sonship or daughterhood.

You Are Unconditionally Loved
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

God’s love for you isn’t based on your performance. It’s unconditional and unbreakable. How comforting to know that if we do fall, we fall into His gentle and unclinching hands.

Practical Steps to Embrace Your Identity in Christ
1. Renew Your Mind Daily
Begin each day by meditating on truths about who God says you are. Replace negative self-talk with scripture-based declarations.

Daily Practice: Choose one identity statement from scripture each morning. Write it down or place it on your phone’s home screen and reflect on it throughout your day.

2. Recognize Identity Attacks
Learn to identify thoughts that contradict your God-given identity. Thoughts of worthlessness, shame, or comparison are often attacks on your true identity. Satan loves keeping you in the dark; the battle is won with God’s Word.

Daily Practice: When negative thoughts arise, ask, “Does this align with how God sees me?” If not, actively replace it with truth.

3. Live from Identity, Not for Identity
When you know who you are, you’re free to serve and love without trying to prove your worth, which is an exhausting way to live.

Daily Practice: Before major decisions or actions, ask yourself, “Am I doing this to establish my worth or from the security of already being valued by God?”

4. Find Community That Reinforces Truth
Surround yourself with people who see you through God’s eyes and remind you of your true identity when you forget. A community of faith will also be a community of grace and mercy.

Daily Practice: Share your identity journey with trusted friends who can speak truth when you struggle to see yourself clearly.

Reflection Questions
Which worldly identity markers (success, appearance, achievements) most strongly influence how you see yourself?

Which aspect of your identity in Christ is hardest for you to truly believe? Why do you think that is?

How might your relationships change if you consistently viewed yourself through God’s perspective?

What specific scriptures about identity could you memorize to combat your most common negative thoughts?

How can you help others discover and embrace their identity in Christ?

Identity Declarations Based on Scripture
- I am chosen and dearly loved (Colossians 3:12)

- I am forgiven and set free (Ephesians 1:7)

- I am God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10)

- I am a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)

- I am an heir with Christ (Romans 8:17)

- I am more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)

- I am never alone (Hebrews 13:5)

- I am complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10)

Conclusion
Your identity in Christ isn’t just positive thinking; it’s the foundational reality of who you truly are. By consciously aligning your self-perception with God’s perspective, you’ll experience the freedom, confidence, and peace that come from knowing you are completely accepted, deeply loved, created intentionally, inherently valued, and purposely eternal (A.L.I.V.E.).

As you journey toward living from this identity, remember that transformation takes time. Be patient with yourself, knowing that embracing your identity in Christ is a lifelong process of renewal and discovery.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)
