Well-being

Lately I am studying a lot about Coaching and during my studies the topic well-being presented itself.

I think that the definition of well-being is very different for everyone.

Understanding that there are many opinions and ways of thinking about this topic, I will use this opportunity to share my view about it and hopefully it will give you inspiration to think about it for yourself.

For me well-being is not only about the physical aspects but also includes the mental and emotional state of being. Especially in times of challenges, how can we find a way to balance our emotions and make peace of what is and the unknown that is ahead of us. It’s not always about the big changes but the small actions we take that sums up bigger achievements.

In that process, I think it’s important not to fall into the trap of not to see the wood for the trees. The process starts by noticing and being aware of what helps you to feel well in the first place. First of all, make sure to check the obvious things, your basic physical human needs: Did you get enough sleep, are you hydrated, did you eat well? Then you can start checking about your emotional state of being? Listen within yourself, what is your heart telling you? How do you feel right now? Maybe you can also sense your feelings in your body, is there a tightness in you, do you feel you are relaxed etc.?

Notice everything that’s going on for you physically and emotionally without making any judgements.

Pause and slow yourself down, let it all be for the moment being. The best thing for me in these moments is to stop thinking, letting go of all that it my mind is ruminating about and then re-wire my brain into thinking what do I need to see that is helping me now?

Another way to stop thinking and getting in a more relaxed space could be doing sports, for me swimming, going for a walk helps to notice my surroundings rather than being occupied in my head. Also reading  helps to focus and relax myself. I think we all have our ways to re-focus ourselves into understanding what is needed for us in the moment when we are not feeling too well. 

I stated it’s not about the big changes that matter, but it could be something very simple. Being present in whatever you are doing at that moment is another good way to slow down and giving yourself the time and space to come up with what’s next. It could be focusing and consciously doing your dishes, when you notice what you need to do to restore your sense of well-being again. So don’t force yourself to come up with an immediate solution and answer to what’s next. Take your time, understanding that you are in a process.

It will also help to feel less stressed to come up with a solution immediately, it’s the whispers in yourself when you stand still that telling you what you need to do next. Be patient with yourself in those moments, slow down, stop and be present listening to yourself and noticing what wants to emerge. It might be frustrating though but notice when you add additional pressure you will intensify your current state of feeling.

I hope you can get some new insights about how to shift and create your well-being, but I am sure you also have your wonderful ways to deal during those times.
