Are You Making These 3 Fatal Leadership Mistakes? 3 Choices for Personal and Professional Success

“From Crazy Busy to Clarity “

3 Critical Leadership Choices for Personal and Professional Success

“I cannot believe it’s September!” Where has the year gone? There is certainly a shift in energy as the kids are getting settled back in school and business gets back to work after a hot and sunny summer. So now what? As women in leadership roles we will return to the not just busy, but crazy busy mode of operating.

But not to worry, there is a better way. We can make choices to create more meaning and joy in our lives and for those around us. There are 3 Leadership Choices that are critical for your success and sanity.

1. Leadership Choice – living from what you value most.

• Living separate from what we value most carries a natural sadness. We want to live with what is most important to us.
• When you live your life in alignment to what you value – there is an easiness, a sense of joy. This shows up in both your work and personal life.
• Taking the time to stop and reconnect with your values will ignite the relationship within yourself, and your relationships with others. Doing a quarterly check-in helps keep this focus sharp and results come so much easier.

Tip – To discover what your core values are, think about what gets you really upset.
Then take a look at what is not being honoured – that’s a core value of yours.

2. Leadership Choice – pausing to truly listen to be present.

• To be listened to is a striking experience. There is a feeling of being known, understood and safe. To be truly listened to is a rare occasion in our “crazy busy” lives.
• The gift of listening is a huge one! The choice to listen creates trust, open relationships, and appreciation.
• I had a mentor that taught me to suspend judgment and assume a positive intent, and in doing so this allowed me to listen openly and not with my agenda.

Tip – There are 3 stages of listening:
o Internal listening – what is going on in your head
o Focused listening – that deep conversation that happens when you lose awareness to what’s around you, like being in a bubble.
o Global listening – Is when you are able to listen to your internal chat, be engaged with others and still be aware of what is going on around you

When you master all 3, you will notice a significant difference in all of your relationships.

3. Leadership Choice – managing your self-talk.

• Thoughts lead to action, action leads to results. The best way to change your results is to change your thoughts.
• Your self-talk is an expression of your thoughts, so be careful and choose your words carefully.

Tip – Notice what you say after “I am.” If you catch yourself saying something like “I am so lazy today,” correct it right away with “I am taking good care of myself.”

We need to face the fact that our world has changed. It’s more complex, changing at hyper speed, and global competition is fierce. It is demanding that we all show up as leaders, but it is critical for us to show up as different leaders as we end the last 4 months of the year. The choice is ours to live in alignment to what’s important to us and what we value. We can choose to slow down and truly be present with those around us. We can choose to listen to know and be known. We can make the choice to manage our self-talk which is our biggest raving fan or our worst enemy.

Best of success and feel free to connect with me, I’d love to hear how you are doing with your 3 Critical Leadership Choices.

Until then, take good care.
Darlene
