Skills and personality traits employers want!

Skills and personality traits that hiring managers want in 2013!

Top Job skills and personality traits that will get you hired in 2013!

By Jeff Monachelli-

It isn’t a newsflash to anyone seeking work, how difficult the economy and job market prove to be these days. It is pivotal that as a job seeker you possess the job skills hiring managers are looking for in this competitive job market. According to CAREERBUILDER, highlighting skills on resumes may be critical, but it’s in the interview setting where a prospective hire can really let them shine. In addition to technical and computer skills, employers are looking for ‘softer’ skills from job seekers. It’s critical to show how you put those skills into action and contributed to the success of previous employers. Providing concrete examples of how your skills equaled success can mean the difference between an offer and a polite exit to the door. Most people seeking a Life Coach want guidance and support; helping them to bring out their best qualities and skill set can set them apart in the job world.

Here are some of the skills that were recently highlighted in a FORBES article from December 2012:

• Critical Thinking-Using reasoning skills to arrive at alternative solutions or conclusions in regards to problems. I always tell my clients it is good to have a balanced viewpoint when using critical thinking.

• Active Listening-Giving your undivided attention to what others are saying; comprehension of all points made (even those you don’t agree with); asking timely questions. Do not interrupt when someone else is speaking; this is critical to efficient work habits and team harmony.

• Sales and Marketing- Having a solid understanding of the methodologies for promotion and selling various product lines. Marketing strategy, demonstration skills and sound sales techniques can make you very competitive in today’s short-attention span markets.

In addition to having the right skills for the job, your personality traits-FORBES-personality traits factor heavily in your chances of being hired. Recent research shows that the majority of employers (80-90%) are looking for new hires to be a good fit with their vocational culture; over pure work skills, as companies are concerned about employee depreciation. Some of the many thousands of the world’s leading employers are looking for very specific traits.

*Professionalism- A hiring manager can spot this or lack thereof in 30 seconds or less. It is how you carry yourself, your dress and overall demeanor. Strive to be professional at all times; you don’t know who may be watching.

*Energy- Having the push to do the job, and to give extra when it is needed. No supervisor likes a lackluster employee, no matter what schools your degrees are from.

*Confidence- holding your head up high and having the confidence to get the job done is very attractive to your future boss. Don’t forget to give a firm handshake and look the person in the eye. All of us are not confident all the time, yet if you work on it, confidence will feel natural…wear it well.

*Decisiveness (perhaps my favorite)…I added this one as it is so important. If someone is ‘stuck’ in their personal or professional life, maybe the reason is no decisions are being made. Something is always sacrificed when you choose; but you must do so if you want to have forward progress in your
life.

I suggest to my coaching clients that they start very small in regards to decision making. Some people are not naturally absolute when it comes to weighing and balancing information. Use affirmations that will inspire you to make small decisions and stick with them. It isn’t always easy, but it will pay off in the future. And your future boss will appreciate this quality greatly in your new dream job!
