All I Do Is Win, or Do I?

Posted on March 19, 2014 by Chris Cooper, One of Thousands of Life Coaches on Noomii.

Tips from Oprah, Michael Jordan, Colonel Sanders and Norman Vincent Peale that changed my life that I know can change yours too!

What does Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Harland Sanders, and Norman Vincent Peale have in common with you and me? Well of course we are all human beings, and we all have the same 24 hrs in a day, and 7 days in a week, yet we also have the same amount of raw potential to win! However the four greats I just mentioned tapped into that potential and transformed it into lasting power.

As a lifestyle and procrastination expert I help professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, students and everyone in between stop procrastinating, stop quitting and start succeeding in business and in life. And over the course of my travels and my work, there are a couple of things that I’ve learned that are essential for success and I will share three of these game-changing principles with you in a little bit. But before I get to that, please allow me to share why I mentioned Oprah, Michael, Harland and Norman. I live for personal development, it may sound cheesy but I do! And in my daily ritual of reading success focused material, I came across an article that caught my eye because it was of its’ title. It was tilted: ”Famous Failures”, what an oxymoron right? Looking for success I stumbled upon failure and I am sure you and I can agree that success and failure are definitely intertwined, and failure very often drives and creates success.

The article stated:

Less than eight months into her first big TV gig, media magnate Oprah Winfrey was pulled from the anchor chair at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, then shuffled through various lower-level jobs- reading headlines on air, writing copy, reporting. She’d just about had it with TV- until she tapped for a local TV show.

NBA Legend Michael Jordan initially failed to make his high school basketball team and admits to other defeats, including more than 9,000 shots missed in his career and more than 300 games lost. He states: “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”

KFC Founder Harland Sanders traveled the country marketing his fried chicken, but restauranteurs did not find his 11 herbs and spices to be particularly finger-lickin’ good. Before finally finding a business partner, the colonel heard “no” more than 1,000 times, as well as more than a few jokes about his starched white suit and bow tie.

Positivity Champion Norman Vincent Peale became so discouraged by publishers’ rejections that he threw his first manuscript in the trash. His wife pulled it out, sent it to one more publisher, and the rest, as they say, is history. The Power of Positive Thinking has now sold more than 20 million copies.
Understanding that failure is often the name of the game that you have to play to win, here are some key steps into becoming a True Game Changer:

1. Re-program- Yes we must reprogram our minds. Our great Creator wired us for success but society has programmed us to fail. I was always taught that leaders are readers and it may seem cliche but its true! If you want to be a financial guru, make sure your study wealth, identify mentors and invest in you! Re-program your mind with success principles, positive affirmations, instructional teachings etc. so that you can truly understand the wealth game (or whatever other kind of a game you choose)- and master it daily! My recommendation is to spend 30 minutes daily to focus on these transformative teachings – try it and I assure you it will significantly impact your life and level of achievement.

2. Just Pick Three- yes I know that we have laundry lists of things to do in our lives everyday, and in my latest book Get Sh*t Done I help you properly prioritize three buckets of items and systematically work through them so that you achieve results. I lump them into 3 categories: Will Do, Should Do, and May Do. And in order to be a game changer I emphatically recommend that you attack three and only three of the Will Dos Daily (these are your MVPS- most valuable priorities)

3. Measure and Assess- after you understand the game, re-program your mind, and tackle your MVPs you have to measure and track key behaviors that are working and those that are not working.

I know this sounds simple but Oprah, Michael, The Colonel, and Norman not only understood the power of failure and success along with these game changing principles, they also knew that consistency and accountability were essential for the creation of momentum in their lives, and they knew that consistency and accountability are critical to their sustained relevance and impact. These icons found coaches and mentors to guide them along the way and as an Elite Life & Business Results Coach myself I assist my clients with creation, consistency, accountability and sustainability. So here’s my coaching advice for you today: Change is not an event- it’s a process and if you want to be a game changer you must give yourself the time and tools to change!
