STOP WORRYING. RELAX.

What exactly is worrying? Why do we do it?

What is worry? We all know what it feels like but where does it come from? Why do we worry?
I like to call worry “Imagination at its most destructive.” Let me explain why:

We worry with good intentions. We are attempting to be prepared for what might happen. However, worrying is very different from logically considering possible future obstacles. In planning anything there is value in being prepared. The problem arises when we begin to list everything that could go wrong or might happen, or when we step outside of logic completely and imagine the most far-fetched scenarios…the ones that have about a 1% change at best of happening. We are attempting to deal with illusions, with imaginary things, and there is no way to effectively do that without creating anxiety. When something happens in your life you face it as it happens. When you try to deal with and solve something that has not even happened it causes nothing but frustration.

Your sub-conscious does not distinguish between reality and illusion. When you have a thought it reacts as if what you are thinking is happening, causing a physical reaction in the body. This is why certain thoughts cause your heart to race while others can calm you down. For example, close your eyes and imagine biting into a nice, juicy lemon. Does your mouth water? Glands ache? Did you actually bite a lemon? Or consider something you are afraid of and see if your heart rate increases. Neither situation has to be actually happening for a reaction to occur.

The obvious disruption worrying causes on both a mental and physical level makes happiness and inner peace difficult if not impossible to maintain. Worse yet, you are actually attracting what you don’t want by worrying. It really is like praying for something you don’t want.
