Visionless

Posted on March 04, 2017 by David Kelly, One of Thousands of Business Coaches on Noomii.

Vision, goals, success, leadership

What is “visionless”? Via Merriam Webster Dictionary: “1 : sightless, blind 2 : lacking vision or inspiration”

One of the single most important arbiters of your future success is to have a clear vision of where you want to go. Where will you be with your career in 1,3, 5, or 10 years? How about your personal life? The business you own? Though a clear vision is critical, our team speaks to hundreds of people each year that have given little or no thought to their future.

If you’ve never completed a visioning exercise; or if it has been a while, now is a great time to give some thought and planning to your future. If you’re a solo entrepreneur, or a career professional you may want to include your spouse / significant other and other supportive family members in your visioning exercise. As a leader, and CEO with employees, you should certainly collaborate with your team to achieve a powerful vision of the future.

Here are some simple steps to follow in order to get started:

Select a time frame (1, 5, 10, 20 years). The time frame should matter to you. You’re selecting a future point by which you plan to meet your vision.

Ask yourself some key questions and provide answers. What does your organization look like? How large is the company? How many people do you employ? How about the number of customers you serve? How do you gain customers? What are you known for? What is your mission? What do people say/think about your organization? How do employees feel about their career? What are the benefits your clients receive from you?

Obtain feedback from your team to your questions and answers. Include the feedback with your questions and answers, refine, re-write and share again with your team. This step can be repeated several times to refine and sharpen the vision for your future.

Stay accountable to your vision. Publish it. Distribute it. Paint it on a wall. Create a vision board. Identify and implement as many methods a possible for you and all stakeholders to see, believe, and stay accountable to your vision on a daily basis.

“Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” – Jack WelshCreat
