Understanding in any Relationship

Posted on January 09, 2018 by Julie Homsy, One of Thousands of Life Coaches on Noomii.

Understanding others and yourself so you can have a great relationship with other people.

As a Professional Coach, it is my job to really understand what my clients are going through, what their goals are and what they want their relationships with other people to be. And where they want to go with their life, their career or their relationship.

The one of the hardest skills to master is understanding, and yes, it is a skill.

Being able to understand a person, a situation, a feeling, a reason or a concept takes patience and good listening skills. It also takes asking the right questions.

If you are having problems with your significant other, take a step back and really listen to what they are saying and ask questions to help you understand. And yes, there are ways to ask the questions so you don’t put them on the defensive.

If your loved one says that you are selfish, ask them why they feel that you are selfish. Okay, this one may sting a little, but sometimes the way they feel is because they misunderstood something you have said or done.

At work your colleague came up with a concept that is being implemented but you don’t agree with it. Ask questions, learn what the reasoning behind the concept is. Ask what the benefits of doing it that particular way is. Maybe you were passed over for a promotion. Don’t you want to know why? Ask! Talk to your boss about wanting that job and ask him/her why you were passed over. Feedback, if we take it in the right context, can make us better.

In order to be accepted, we have to understand one another…we have to ask questions to get to know one another. In order to diminish conflicts we have to understand the why’s, the what’s, the how’s and even the when’s.

Coaching is about asking the questions, understanding and proving guidance.
