Master your conversations: Start with this step

Posted on August 08, 2025 by Ramy Elgebaly, One of Thousands of Executive Coaches on Noomii.

Extraction from my recent book " Whispering Power"

Imagine you are driving to a specific destination. You may need to adjust your route due to traffic, detours, or unexpected roadblocks, but as long as you keep your destination in mind, you remain on track. Similarly, in communication, having a clear objective allows you to navigate conversations with flexibility while still achieving your desired outcome. Even if a discussion seems to momentarily diverge, you can steer it back toward your goal by adapting your approach strategically. This ensures that you remain in control and avoid being sidetracked by distractions or resistance.

The first step towards effective communication is having a clear objective that you work towards achieving. Without a defined goal, conversations can easily spiral into meaningless arguments that drain your energy and lead nowhere. When you know what you want to accomplish in a discussion, you can guide the conversation with purpose, avoiding unnecessary conflict and keeping interactions productive.

A power law: Flexibility in communication is more than just adapting to changing circumstances—it is about developing the ability to see things from multiple perspectives and detach yourself from rigidity. When you embrace flexibility, you become more aware of different viewpoints, allowing you to respond strategically rather than react emotionally. This mindset helps you maintain control while making others feel understood and valued.

Let us think Flexibility Vs. Objectivity (A Metaphor)

Imagine a river flowing downstream. As it moves, it encounters rocks and obstacles in its path. A rigid object might crash into these obstacles and break apart, but water does something different—it adapts. Instead of stopping, it flows around the rocks, finds new paths, and even shapes the landscape over time. Despite its fluidity, the river eventually controls its environment by carving valleys, reshaping landscapes, and even breaking down the rocks that initially stood in its way.
