6 Ways to Take Control of Your Life

<p dir="ltr">Because of the pace of our world, many people find themselves reacting to what life throws at them instead of making space to respond intentionally. This leads to cyclical frustration and often burnout. Things may be getting done, but life is not really being lived. The following outlines items to consider and reflect on, allowing you to have the outcomes you want by being proactive.</p> <ol> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Establish values – what do you value in life? Your values are the pillars on which you will lay the foundation for engaging yourself, others, and circumstances. Knowing what is important to you creates clarity in navigating daily life.</p> </li> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Be honest with yourself – most of us don’t know where we are going because we don’t know how to be honest about where we are currently. We all need to take time to assess moment to moment, day to day, week to week, year to year, where we are. What are the struggles we are having? Where do we feel called? What things are no longer serving us? Why are we engaged in x, y, or z?</p> </li> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Invest time and energy into mutually life-giving things – so often, we give of ourselves to spaces, places, and people that are not life-giving to us. We settle for being needed instead of being wanted. We allow things outside of us to determine what we give our time to. Where and with whom do you feel appreciated, and do you appreciate?</p> </li> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Establish boundaries – we must set boundaries with our time, bodies, and space. How often are you telling people “no”? How frequently are you building in the margin to rest and renew your physical body? Are you speaking up for yourself? Have you given people unlimited access to you?</p> </li> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Get rid of the “shoulds” – Many of us grew up in households and/ or live in a current climate hyper-focused on morality as the gold standard. A sense of moral rightness often comes with a lot of “shoulds.” Ironically, the more we focus on the behavior indicated by a “should,” the less authentically and joyfully we move through life. </p> </li> <li dir="ltr" aria-level="1"> <p dir="ltr" role="presentation">Focus on becoming the healthiest version of yourself – When we focus on what others are doing, did not, or could be doing, we lose sight of how to take agency for ourselves. By owning our agency and responsibility for ourselves first, we create space to encourage others to do the same, without judgment. We free ourselves from the comparison game where we can offer grace to others that we want for ourselves.</p> </li> </ol> <p dir="ltr">Take some time to reflect on each one. This doesn’t have to be done in a day. Allow yourself flexibility while making it a priority to move through this reflection exercise.
