The Two Things You Need to do to Move Forward in Your Career...

Posted on July 19, 2017 by Jason Rosado, One of Thousands of Business Coaches on Noomii.

Are you stuck in your career? Here are two things that you can do right now that will move you forward.

I was making a jump from small business to corporate 19 years ago, and in my first corporate job interview, the conversation turned to one of my favorite topics, even back then…

Motivation.

The job was for an assistant recruiter position helping computer programmers from overseas to get jobs here when we had a shortage of programmers in the USA. The interviewer was telling me about how this position had to hand-hold potential clients and get to them to take all the necessary steps of getting their resumes ready, their passports and work visa applications submitted, and so on.

The recruiting manager, with his 30 years of experience, said to me:

“People are lazy, and they will change for only one of two reasons. Either:

• It becomes too painful to remain where they are, or

• They have a very clear vision of where they want to go and how to get there."

Well, this has stayed with me ever since. I think of it almost every day, and if I’m not specifically thinking it, I am using parts of this concept to help people make big changes in their business, work and life.

Now, in my 25-plus years of coaching, mentoring and developing business leaders to do more, achieve more, and be more, I can debate the “people are lazy” part, but the two reasons he gave are generally true.

We do tend to stay complacent if we don’t have painful motivation to change a bad situation or laser clear focus on how to create a better one.

So here’s what to do:

1.) As you’re working on your goals and what you want to achieve in the coming week, months or year – and I recommend you THINK BIG – consider where in your life or work are you too comfortable (you probably know it without thinking too long) and what steps you might need to take to get to where you’d rather be.

2.) Then write it down. Write down a detailed description of what you want – one or two sentences, or an entire page, it’s up to you. And then list a few of the steps you’ll need to take to get there.
Just doing this simple, quick activity will help you achieve more than you realize.

Have fun with it. Make it a game. Share it with someone close to you. Ask them if they’d like to do it, too.

But just do it.

Because if you don’t, you’re likely to stay in that place of not painful enough but not clear enough. And things will likely stay the same.

But if you do, the chances of you changing, succeeding and achieving more will go way up.

I promise you.

Here’s to your great, new successful you!

Jason
